Make This $250 Clutch for Under $40 With an Easy DIY Hack
My first DIY was a DIY copycat. I was six years old and my parents wouldn’t buy me an expensive canopy bed for my doll, so I decided to make one myself with an old shoebox, chopsticks, and scraps of old clothes. I loved that bed, probably even more than any store-bought version. To this day, some of my favorite DIYs are copies of things I’ve seen in stores!
I recently went bananas over this super cute Ann Howell Bullard Banana Pop Clutch ($250), but the price tag was a bit steep for me. Great news though: This clutch is totally DIY-able, and we pulled ours off in under $40. Check out our easy and inexpensive hack to help you personalize any leather clutch.
This DIY includes three free printables for you to personalize your heart out!
Materials and Tools:
- ILISHOP beige clutch ($30)
- clutch design printed on Avery InkJet Iron-On Dark T-Shirt Transfers ($11) paper (get the banana printable here, the Matisse printable here, and the star printable here)
- scissors
- iron
Instructions:
1. Cut out shapes in printable.
2. Peel off paper backing from shapes and arrange on clutch.
3. Place tracing paper over the whole clutch and iron. Let cool and remove tracing paper.
Print the printable on a sheet of dark iron-on transfer paper and cut out the shapes. Peel off the paper backing from the shapes and arrange them on the clutch.
This next step is important: Place a piece of tracing paper over the whole clutch before ironing. This will make sure the hot iron doesn’t ruin the clutch. Iron over the designs for one minute. Let cool and remove tracing paper. All done!
Going bananas over bananas!
This one is inspired partly by Ann Howell Bullard and partly by Matisse.
